Mexico remains among top 10 cruise destinations

Cozumel, Q.R. — Mexico remains among the top 10 cruise destinations worldwide as cruise ship companies reiterate their confidence in the country.

Large cruise ship companies such as Carnival & PLC, who own P&O Princess Cruises, say they will continue offering routes to various Mexican ports since Mexico is among the top 10 cruise destinations in the world.

Director for Princess Cruises for Latin America Ruth Leal, says that Princess Cruises was the first to dock at Mexican ports. She says that the company has been docking in Mexico since the 1960s.

She also said that Carnival Corporation & PLC and P&O Princess Cruises endorse the long-standing trust of their routes throughout Mexico, adding that Mexican routes are preferred by tourists along with European ports, Caribbean islands and Alaska.

Leal explained that Cozumel receives around 1,200 cruise ships per year, making it the main port of call in Latin America, capturing 16 percent of the global market. There are other popular ports of call in Mexico including Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Mahuahual, Mazatlan, Ensenada and Puerto Progreso, which are routes for many international companies.

“The industry is in a time when rates are the most attractive they have been in recent years, and that is something that is being discovered by more and more Mexicans who want a new way of traveling to see more places,” she said adding that this year they expect between 350,000 and 400,000 Mexican cruise travelers.
