Mexico City, D.F. — Data released by government agencies show that in Mexico, there is an average of 230 police officers per 100,000 inhabitants.

The data comes from Mexican agencies including the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE), the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) and the National Population Council (Conapo).

According to Conapo, in Mexico there are 331,000 preventative police for the country’s total population of 123.5 million people with Mexico City having the highest police to inhabitants ratio. Their statistics reveal that there are 678 police and transit agents to every 100,000 people in the country’s most populated city.

“This behavior is certainly due to the fact that Mexico City is the most populous city in the country and it constitutes the workplace of half of the police and transit agents residing in the State of Mexico,” stated INEGI.

In the country, the average is currently 231 police and transit agents per 100,000 people. In 2009, a United Nations survey reported Mexico as having 366 police agents per 100,000 people.

ENEO reported that police officers in Mexico are paid an average of 292 peso per day or a salary of just under 10,000 peso per month, noting that the country’s officers work an average of 65.4 hours per week. Statistics also revealed that 82 percent of Mexico’s police are male with an average education equal to that of Grade 11 (second year high school) with 71 percent of officers having been on the job for at least three years.

The last reports provided to the United Nations show that in 2015, the United States averaged 284 police per 100,000 inhabitants while Canada averaged 185 (2009). According to Salary.com, an officer in the United States earns a median annual police patrol officer salary of $53,229 USD with a range usually between $44,323 and $62,817. In Canada, a first-class officer in Canada’s big cities now earns $80,000-$90,000 CAD a year on average before overtime and benefits.
