Mexico City police officer dies of COVID-19 related complications

Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico has lost its first police officer to due complications related to COVID-19. The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of the Ciudad de México confirmed the death of one of their own after he contracted the virus.

The agency was notified of his death by his wife after the officer was sent home in March to self-isolate during his recovery. He was eventually admitted into the General Hospital of Zaragoza. On Saturday morning, his wife notified SSC of this death.

The officer, Santillán Morales Efraín who was assigned to the Sector Nápoles, was diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 27 after performing security duty at the March 14 Vive Latino Festival at Foro Sol. He died April 4.

“This agency joins the relatives and friends of the police officer who unfortunately died because of the virus that has generated a health emergency in the city and our country, and will provide all the necessary support to the family in these difficult times,” the SSC said in a statement.
