Cancun, Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Meteorological forecasters for Mexico say they are predicting a cool winter season with the entry of 53 cold fronts before the season is over.
La Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua) reports the number of cold fronts for the 2019-2020 season, which began in September and will end in May, is 53 systems, higher than the historic average which is 44.
La Comisión Nacional del Agua says that two of the three forecasted cold fronts for September did arrive, one on September 23 and the other on September 28.
They report that for the month of October, they forecast five cold systems to move into Mexico, six for November and seven for December, making them colder than average. They add that for the months of January and February (2020), each month will bring with it eight cold systems, also making them colder and more active than average.
They explain that at the beginning of the season, cold fronts can interact with the humidity of tropical cyclones and produce torrential rains in warmer regions.
During the winter season, nighttime temperatures for the Cancun, Riviera Maya regions can dip as low as 12C (53F), but regain decent daytime temperatures of around 28C (82F).
