Men arrested in Hotel Zone for killing, eating crocodile

Cancun, Q.R. — Three men have been arrested in the Cancun Hotel Zone after being reported for killing a crocodile.

On Friday, Tourist Police spotted white smoke rising from an area near the Nichupte Lagoon in the Cancun Hotel Zone. When they arrived they saw three men near the lagoon, all of whom ran when the saw the approaching police.

The men were chased down and captured, which is when police saw blood on their clothing. The three men had been eating a crocodile they pulled from the Nichupte Lagoon behind Zocalo Square.

Elements from Benito Juarez tourist police were first to respond to the 2:00 p.m. incident where they found the men had dismembered a crocodile with another (still alive) tied in rope. The scene unfolded in an area near where the men had set a food trap to lure the animals.

The men, who claimed to be hungry, were arrested and held until environmental officials arrived.

Francisco López Reyes, former tourism director for Benito Juarez, requested the assistance of Profepa, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, who made the three men available to the Attorney General’s Office.

It is a federal crime to kill crocodiles in Nichupte Lagoon. Two of the three men were listed as being 41-years of age, while the third was identified as being 23.

The second captured crocodile was released unharmed.
