Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – A large portion of the Yucatan Peninsula suffered a mass power outage yesterday that, for some, lasted more than four hours.
The daytime blackout was felt from Campeche to Quintana Roo as approximately 1.7 million CFE users were left without electricity. Affected areas included Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo.
Reports indicate that there was a power outage in the transmission line of the Grijalva (River — formally known as the Tabasco River) hydroelectric complex that supplies electricity for the peninsula.
Emergency alerts were activated and power was eventually restored in all parts. In Playa del Carmen, the blackout was felt around 11:15 a.m. and was restored by 12:30. In Tulum, however, residents remained without electricity until 2:00 p.m.
