Mazatlán fishermen killed when struck by lightening

Mazatlán, Sinaloa — A fisherman has been killed after being struck by lightening as he and his partner were returning to shore.

The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. just off the shore of Playa Norte in Mazatlán. The surviving fisherman said that they were just returning to shore when the rain started. He recalled suddenly feeling a massive push. When he woke up, he saw that his fishing partner was floating in the sea with burns on his body.

“I heard a loud noise. I felt hot and when I turned around, Sergio was no longer there. I looked for him. I thought the lightning had burned him, but I found him floating,” said his partner.

“I didn’t want to look. I just brought him back to the beach and left him inside the (boat) Katiria and called the Red Cross.”

The deceased man has been identified as 68-year-old Sergio N. Emergency services along with police arrived to tend to the scene and remove the body.
