Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Former Playa del Carmen mayor, Mauricio Gongora Escalante, has been found linked to a third charge related to embezzlement of 5.2 million peso.
The Attorney General of the State fulfilled a warrant against the former mayor of Solidarity now for embezzlement in tort to City Council for an amount of 5.2 million peso.
Through a statement, the Specialized Anticorruption Prosecutor said that a hearing has been set to formalize the new charges and that Gongora will remain in preventative detention.
Gongora was arrested January 25 in Mexico City and has since had two other hearings, both of which resulted in him being linked to various criminal offenses while holding his position as mayor. This latest crime of embezzlement for 5.2 million peso is the third of which he has been linked.
The proceeding two charges included irregularities regarding the air carrier VipSaesa and material damages of 284.8 million peso. Five properties along with six vehicles were confiscated after his arrest.
After the hearing, Gongora Escalante was returned to his cell at the Center for Social Reintegration of Chetumal.
