Cancun, Q.R. – A man of Spanish origin was arrested at the Cancun International Airport for attempting to leave the country with protected animals.
The animals were found when the man tried to check in baggage bound for Germany. Upon inspection, 73 species of birds were discovered along with 95 specimens of butterflies. Several of the birds and butterflies were found deceased due to suffocation or from being crushed due to overcrowding. The Spanish native was found to have 168 birds hidden in a single suitcase.
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Environment (Profepa) was called along with the federal police who arrested the man. Profepa officials found the surviving animals were under a great deal of stress due to poor conditions and were immediately treated and relocated to a protective environment. Sixteen of the birds died.
The man was presented to the Public Ministry for processing for attempted illegal smuggling. He was found carrying animals that are listed in NOM under Special Protection status in the state of Quintana Roo.
