Man thought responsible for murder of Chiapas journalist arrested in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A man alleged responsible for the murder of a Chiapas journalist has been arrested in Playa del Carmen.

State and federal police detained Juan David Martínez Trujillo, one of the alleged murderers of Chiapas journalist Mario Gómez Sánchez in Playa del Carmen. The arrest took place over the weekend after police reported receiving tips from the public.

On September 21, Chiapas journalist Mario Leonel Gómez Sánchez was shot four times outside his home in Yajalón. The Attorney General of Chiapas, Raciel López Salazar, said that since his arrest, three others have been taken into custody for their alleged involvement in the murder.

The arrest of Juan David Martínez Trujillo came “Thanks to the coordination with the various federal and state agencies, as well as the timely participation of citizens,” explained López Salaza. Hours after his arrest, he was transferred back to Chiapas.

At the time of his arrest, police also seized a van which matches the descriptions given by witnesses outside the home of the victim. Martínez Trujillo is considered a leader of a band of small-scale drug traffickers who will also be investigated for other crimes.

The arrest of Martínez Trujillo was made in conjunction with the Attorney General’s Office, Federal Police and Prosecutor’s Office of Quintana Roo along with citizen tips. Mario Leonel Gómez Sánchez was a journalist with El Heraldo de Chiapas.
