Cancun, Q.R. — A local man, who was caught stealing turtle eggs last year, has been sentenced to four years in prison.
The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) of Quintana Roo sentenced the man to four years in state prison after he was caught stealing turtle eggs from a beach in Tulum National Park during the 2015 turtle season.
He was found guilty for the collection of products (sea turtle eggs) from a naturally protected area, which is a federal offense.
Fourty-one-year-old Miguel Espinoza Reyes was arrested last September by Municipal Police after being found in possession of more than 30 turtle eggs. The eggs were stolen from Caleta Tanka and placed in a plastic bag.
Mr. Reyes was arrested and handed over to the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) for processing.
He will serve his sentence at the Centro de Reinserción Social in Cancún.
