Mexican authorities confirmed a 22-year old male, who fell unnoticed from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, was spotted and rescued by staff from the Disney Cruise line outside Cozumel.
The incident happened on the morning of January 8 when a 22-year old male passenger on Oasis of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, somehow fell overboard just before reaching Cozumel in Mexico’s Caribbean. Authorities have yet to publicly identify the passenger.
A Disney cruise passenger, who was on deck with his daughter at about 6:30 am, said he heard cries for help. Disney staff said that between passengers and crew, they worked together at keeping an eye on the man as a lifeboat was lowered into the water for rescue. Another Disney passenger, David Hearn, posted the captured moment on YouTube.
A Disney Cruise spokeswoman confirmed that the Disney Magic ship did pick up an overboard passenger from another cruise line on January 8. She declined further comment, however, Royal Caribbean confirmed that a passenger “went overboard” and in a statement said the, “22-year-old male guest from Oasis of the Seas went overboard near Cozumel, Mexico. He was spotted by a crew member from another cruise ship, and picked up. We are grateful for the other ship’s assistance.”
Royal Caribbean spokeswoman, Cynthia Martinez, said that the closed-circuit TV video showed the man was alone on the Oasis ship Deck 5 when he went overboard at 6:07 a.m. “There were no other guests or crew around at the time.”
Port Captain at Cozumel, Alfonso Rodriguez, said the man does not remember how he fell overboard. He was treated at a local hospital before being flown back to the US. Rodriguez said that most people who experience that kind of fall break their neck. Hitting water like that is like hitting concrete.
