Man drowns in Tulum cenote after trying to save daughter

Tulum, Q.R. — A man who jumped into a cenote to save his daughter has died. The 38-year-old Tabasco man identified as Cristian N, was pronounced on scene by paramedics after he jumped into the water when his daughter fell from a paddleboard.

The incident happened Sunday just after 4:00 p.m. at Cenote Encanto in the municipality of Tulum. According to the police report, the man had borrowed a paddleboard to use while visiting the cenote.

While doing so, his daughter fell into the water. He jumped in to save her but failed to resurface. Other people at the cenote who saw what happened jumped in after the man when they noticed he did not reappear.

Despite efforts by paramedics, the man was unresponsive to resuscitation efforts. Civil Protection has since closed the cenote for a lack of safety measures including on duty lifeguards.
