Lost 82-year-old found disorientated 7 kilometers off road in thick jungle

Nuevo X-Cán, Q.R. — An elderly man reported missing after becoming lost was located by a volunteer search team. On Monday night, the 82-year-old area native was found alive and well after spending more than 24 hours lost in the thick jungle.

The man, Humberto Loría Canul, was discovered disorientated and dehydrated but alive after spending the night in the woods. His family said that he got lost while walking to his farm.

According to William René Chan Canul, director of Lázaro Cárdenas Public Safety, he was found in an area off the roadway to Cobá seven kilometers into the jungle. The elderly man was located after an intense search in which volunteers, ejidatarios and Civil Protection personnel participated.

Chan said that the man was found very dehydrated Monday night after being exposed to the sun during his Sunday travels. He was given medical attention and found to otherwise, be in good health.

He added that according to the family, it is not the first time the senior has become lost due to disorientation. The community of Nuevo Xcán is located southwest of the city of Cancun in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.
