Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – A new luxury complex being built in central Playa del Carmen is being investigated for water contamination.
It Hotel and Residences, a new luxury hotel-apartment project set for completion in October 2017, is being investigated for endangering and possibly contaminating underground water sources.
The Municipal Environment of Solidarity reported that although there has been no suspension of work at this point, they have notified Profepa after municipal inspectors confirmed the damage. Municipal officials sent more than 10 photos to Profepa showing the degree of negligence of the building company who dug too deep resluting in them reaching the natural water table.
Liane Aké Canto, director of Municipal Environment explained that, “Once the construction water touches national waters Profepa has to investigate. We have already provided some information to Profepa, however, we are finalizing the complaint so it can be sent through the appropriate offices.”
He added, “They will need to make an environmental impact statement because unfortunately, they reached the water table, something that should have been detected earlier. The depth you have, the fact that the water is exposed, you have to be more careful because anything that is poured into the area could be contaminating the water table there.”
Liana Aké Canto recognizes that this case is an example of why federal agency offices such as Profepa are needed in Playa del Carmen. He says that there is an average of 30 violations per year in the city that require federal intervention.
It Hotel and Residences is a project of Gamma Master Broker (GMB), the same company who had their condominium project The City My Menesse, shut down earlier this month for violations.
