Cancun, Q.R. — A downtown street was closed in Cancun yesterday while public security responded to the discovery of an undetonated grenade.
The call was made at 7:00 a.m. when a passerby says he noticed what looked like a grenade in a sidewalk planter. Public security officials quickly arrived at Yaxchilán Avenue in the area of Sunyaxchén and Uxmal to close off the streets.
The grenade was found inside a planter pot in front of a restaurant. Personnel from the Battalion suited up to remove the device from the sidewalk.
Police had the streets cordoned off for nearly three hours. Elements from the bomb squadron of the Mexican army arrived to retrieve the explosive device, which was taken to their facilities.
There were no reports of injuries.
