Cozumel, Q.R. – A large crocodile has been captured on the south end of Isla Cozumel. The animal was spotted in the Fiesta Americana Cozumel area. Swimmers along the beach by the hotel became alarmed by the news and ran out of the water.
Local biologists say that it is common this time of year as the animals come out of the water in search of food. They also said that the problem of crocodiles is consistent as they return to look for food. It’s expected there will be more cases before the summer season is over.
The crocodile was captured by rangers of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) and the Heroic Fire Department. They said the animal weighed between 150 and 180 kilograms and was about three meters in length.
Conanp personnel and firefighters agreed to release the alligator in the Protected (ANP) Punta Sur National Area.
In March, a crocodile of about one meter long was seen sun bathing on Caletita public beach. It was captured by members of the Fire Department.
