Judge under investigation after releasing two on Isla Mujeres kidnapping charges

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A judge is under investigation by the Judicial Council of Quintana Roo after he released two men accused of kidnapping on the continental mainland of Isla Mujeres.

In a statement, the Judicial Council reports that Judge Shelling Kierkegard Novelo Yeh will be investigated by the Judicial Council after releasing two alleged hitmen who were reportedly caught in a flagrant crime when they forced a kidnapped man to dig his own grave.

The two subjects were arrested by the Municipal Police of Isla Mujeres in the construction area of an upcoming hotel where the kidnapped victim said they forced him at gunpoint to dig his own grave. The man was allegedly kidnapped and forced to dig a hole where he said they were going to bury him under the construction after killing him.

When police arrived at the scene, the man had already suffered an amputated finger and was transferred hospital.

The presiding judge decided not to link the two accused to the process, alleging not enough evidence. When the ruling was released, the Judicial Council issued a statement stating that they will open an “exhaustive” investigation into the facts.
