Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — After an eight-hour private hearing between lawyers and a judge, ex-mayor of Solidaridad Mauricio Góngora Escalante was found linked to the crime of embezzlement.
The former mayor and candidate for governor was transferred from the Center for Social Readaptation prison of Chetumal to a Playa del Carmen court room for the day-long hearing that saw him linked to crimes of embezzlement for the alleged deviation of nearly 246 million peso.
According to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office, “During the initial hearing held on Thursday, prosecutors presented the evidence in relation to the facts that are attributed to Mauricio N.
“After a debate among prosecutors and the defense of the accused, the judge considered that there was sufficient evidence to link him to these processes.
“Also, it decreed as precautionary measure the justified preventive detention and one month for the closing of the investigations.”
On the judge’s order for preventive detention, Góngora Escalante was transferred back to Chetumal prison.
