Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas — A journalist has been shot and killed in the center of Nuevo Laredo, in the state of Tamaulipas.
Journalist Carlos Domínguez Rodríguez was shot in Nuevo Laredo when he was driving with his daughter and grandson in his Ford Focus. The murder took place Friday at 3:00 p.m.
Domínguez Rodríguez wrote a political column and worked in El Diario de Nuevo Laredo.
In a public statement, the Government of Tamaulipas lamented and strongly condemned the killing of political journalist Carlos Domínguez Rodríguez and expressed their solidarity with the family.
The Attorney General’s Office of the State immediately initiated investigations to follow up the case and establish the circumstances that affected the homicide. They are also hoping to detail if the killing was motivated due to his journalistic work.
“The State Government says that it will act firmly against any attack on the freedom of expression and the performance of journalists.”
Security authorities cordoned off the area, while personnel of the Expert Services area of the Attorney General’s Office transferred the body.
It is the first murder of a journalist in 2018 after closing a year in which at least 10 reporters were killed, in what international observers considered a serious crisis for freedom of expression in the country.
