Jet ski fire injures two tourists

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Two tourists suffered minor injuries Monday when the jet ski they rented exploded.

A Wave Runner jet ski was deemed destroyed when the rear of the watercraft caught fire and exploded. The jet ski was parked along the shore in front of the Hyatt Hotel in Playa del Carmen. It was approximately 2:20 p.m. when witnesses say they saw it catch fire. An on-duty lifeguard helped remove the two tourists from the jet ski before it exploded.

The watercraft is owned by a local rental business, Kay-Kib Water Sport, who had all papers, permits and insurance in order. Civil Protection general director, Orlando Munoz Gomez, says this was an isolated incident and that the insurance company will likely cover it.

The jet ski rental shop was closed for the remainder of Monday but is set to reopen Tuesday. The two tourists who rented the ski were transferred to a private hosiptal with minor injuries including burns. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
