Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An Italian man wanted for drug trafficking has been arrested in Playa del Carmen.
Mexican police have arrested Italian Iván Fornari, who authorities say was wanted for Spain to Italy drug trafficking. Officials say that Fornari has been considered a fugitive since October of 2016.
Work involving Interpol, investigators from the Central Operation Service (OCS) and the Mobile Brigade of Cagliari, the 35-year-old Italian was arrested in the exclusive community of Playacar in Playa del Carmen last week.
Aside from drug trafficking, Fornari is also charged with property theft and resisting authorities.
Fornari had served a previous sentence of nearly six years in an Italian prison before heading to Mexico. Since arriving in Playa del Carmen, Fornari frequently updated his social media account with his real name and sun kissed photos of himself, something that quickly drew the attention of Italy’s Cagliari Mobile Brigade.
With the help of Mexican officials, Fornari’s location was quickly figured out. Since he was in the country without a visa, Fornari was deported to Rome where he was arrested by Italian authorities.
