Isla Mujeres residents work on legal plan to relocate CFE power plant

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Some residents of Isla Mujeres are working on a legal plan that would see the CFE power plant relocated away from their homes.

Residents who live near the newly placed plant say the noise generated by the mega-power producer not only creates thunderous noise, but also emits thousands of cubic meters of diesel fuel when used.

The plant, which belongs to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), was place on the island in March to provide the additional electricity required by some areas. Still, neighbors say that the noise generated by the plant when its in use makes sleep impossible since it sometimes runs both day and night, affecting both private homes and rental properties.

Neighbors say that the plant is correcting the power demand that now exists in Punta Sur, but that it’s unfortunate it had to be placed near a residential area.
