Isla Mujeres, Q.R.– A hotel fire on the mainland of Isla Mujeres has left one dead and several injured.
The fire broke out in the maintenance room of the Beloved Playa Mujeres Hotel at Punta Sam Wednesday. Emergency 911 received the call at 1:00 p.m. and sent emergency personnel to the hotel.
When they arrived, firemen found the room filled with flames. Several people were rescued from the room including a man and a woman.
The man was rushed to hospital but was pronounced at 2:05 p.m. The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old David Geovani Cauich Hay. Hay worked as a maintenance man for the hotel. Reports say he died of smoke inhalation.
The woman with whom he was rescued suffered burns to her face and was reported to be in serious condition. The health status of two other workers, who were taken to hospital by taxi before ambulances arrived, remains unknown.
A fifth worker was also taken to hospital with burns but is reported to be stable.
Firefighters spent more than an hour battling the flames and thick smoke. Civil Protection says the cause of the fire is still unknown.
