Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Juan Carrillo Soberanis, municipal president of Isla Mujeres, announced that his government is working hard to achieve a second Blue Flag beach certification.
Carrillo Soberanis says that they are working toward certifying Playa Norte with the globally recognized Blue Flag status. If successful, it would be the second Blue Flag certified beach for the island, the first being Playa Centro.
“We know the importance of having such a prestigious recognition as Blue Flag. It not only helps to increase the influx of visitors, but also guarantees all those who come to our beaches that they are clean and safe places,” he explained.
For the second consecutive year, Playa Norte made the Traveler’s Choice 25 Best Beaches in the World list by both domestic and international tourists.
Joaquín Arturo Díaz, national director of Blue Flag, explained that the Foundation for Environmental Education is working on the island in order to guarantee that beach meets the criteria necessary to belong to the program.
“We have had contact with the mayor so that the work aimed at certifying Playa Norte begin immediately. It is a fact that Isla Mujeres is in the process of having its second Blue Flag beach for the 2019-2020 season,” he said.
