Intoxicated driver mistaken for heart attack victim

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Police responded to several emergency calls from concerned citizens on Monday when they spotted a taxi driver slumped over in the driver’s seat of his car. The car was nearing a red light when it rear-ended the vehicle in front of it causing it to hit another vehicle. Witnesses called emergency 066 about the accident citing a possible heart attack victim.

Around 12:30 p.m., police and emergency vehicles arrived on the scene in central Playa del Carmen where they found an unresponsive taxi driver who had partially fallen into the passenger seat. Initially emergency responders thought the lifeless taxi driver suffered a heart attack.

When authorities began to check for vital signs, they realized that the 29-year-old driver was in an advanced state of intoxication. It’s been reported that the taxi driver had recently left a beach party. He was found in the driver’s seat of his taxi with his shirt inside out, shoeless and covered in sand.

The driver was arrested for driving under the influence.
