International call for doctors continues to fill Mexico’s medical void

Mexico City, Mexico — Two weeks after an additional international call for doctors in Mexico, the government reports more than 500 sent applications. During his Wednesday morning press conference, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced 597 medical specialists have applied to fill the positions.

The details were revealed by the General Director of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Zoé Robledo Aburto, who reported 13 days after its launch, 597 applicants were received of which 374 were foreign and 223 Mexican.

The highest number of applicants were from Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Colombia. The specialties with the most applications were Medical Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Obstetrics, Traumatology and Orthopedics.

Aburto says the call remains open to fill general practitioners and nursing positions in Nayarit, Tlaxcala, Baja California Sur, Sonora and Campeche.
