Tulum, Q.R. – An entertainment structure along a Tulum beach has been removed after authorities found it was being set up in a turtle nesting area.
Officials from the Akumal office of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) discovered a large stage being set up for a night-time light and sound event. The large structure was found in an area where turtles nest inside Tulum National Park.
A call from the administration of Tulum National Park led Profepa inspectors to the site where they found a large metal stage fully erected. Additionally, officials found the set up included wide screen televisions, chairs and umbrellas and a roped off area of 300 square meters.
An separate inspection by the Environmental Impact and Federal Maritime Zone found that the group did not have authorization from SEMARNAT to set up the musical event, nor did they have permission to install the lights and equipment. They also discovered five turtle nests within the roped off area.
