Illegal mangrove removal found at Playa Xcalacoco

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – A citizen complaint has led authorities to close another illegal project at Playa Xcalacoco.

Personnel with the Environment Department inspected the property El Limonar which was fenced and closed. When they arrived, they discovered a mangrove area had been removed to create another beach access for the Azul Fives Hotel for the company’s Tourism Development Xcalacoco Residential Beach.

According to the Environmental Impact Manifesto (MIA) issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), this area should have been respected for the natural conservation of species that inhabit that area. It is estimated that the extent destroyed is about 100 square meters. The mangrove is listed in the Official Mexican Standard (NOM) 059 of Semarnat and places it in the threatened category.

Orquídea Trejo Buendía, Director of Environment, reported that they are in the process of filing a complaint with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), in addition to making their own sanctions.
