Hundreds protest ferry price hike in Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — Hundreds of people participated in a kilometer-long street protest on Cozumel Sunday in objection to the recent ferry ticket increase.

Protesters gathered near the San Miguel terminal displaying their distaste for the recent price hike in ferry crossing tickets that have seen prices doubled.

José Julio Azcorra, leader of the march, said that they had spoken with the General Secretary of City Council to invite Cozumel mayor, Pedro Joaquín Delbouis to join since this issue is a federal matter. He said Juanita Alonso Marrufo, representative of the Federal Government in Cozumel, was also invited.

In November, ticket prices for the Cozumel-Playa del Carmen ferry route were increased from 70 peso to 140 for a single trip and from 150 to 300 peso for a round trip. The Ministry of Communications and Transportation says the price hike is within the right of the ferry companies and that no irregularities were detected.
