Hotel occupancy rates up in Riviera Maya says association

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Despite the violence that has occurred in the destination, hotel occupancy this year compared to 2016, in the period from January to October, remains two percentage points above.

According to a report released by Manuel Paredes Mendoza, director of the Hotel Association of the Riviera Maya, from January to October 2016 there was an average occupancy of 81 percent in the area’s nearly 43,000 hotel rooms. During the same period in 2017, the average is 83.4 percent in approximately 45,000 rooms.

Paredes Mendoza commented that there are no reports of low occupancy in the lodging centers, despite recent negative Tripadvisor comments. He says they also do not expect visitor numbers to decrease toward the end of the year, but on the contrary. He says the figures will reach averages of more than 85 percent according to the reservation booklets.

“We have faced some challenges with media issues, but without complete foundation. Now Tripadvisor is putting labels to some hotels in the Riviera Maya, but this is totally unfounded. It is a totally arbitrary issue and we know that our hotel products are of great quality, the numbers do not allow us to lie.

“The performance of the destination and the preference for the quality of the services we provide is very positive,” said Paredes Mendoza.

Tripadvisor searches for the hotels Grand Velas, Iberostar Paraíso Maya and Iberostar Paraíso Lindo on the Tripadvisor yielded complaints by tourists, however Tripadvisor added their own addendum in red: “Tripadvisor was notified of information in the means of communication or recent events related to this property that may not be reflected in the opinions found in this profile. As a result, you may want to look for additional information about this establishment when you plan your trip.”

Paredes Mendoza notes that allegedly, grievances in the named hotels were committed against American tourists, although at the local level, the ministerial authorities have no filed complaints or other information about them.
