Holiday drownings in Cancun sad start to New Year

Two men died in separate drowning accidents over the holiday season in Cancun.

An American man died Christmas day swimming outside his hotel in the Cancun Hotel Zone. According to reports, 57-year-old Richard Dauhin drowned in the afternoon hours of Christmas day while swimming outside his hotel, The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort at Km 12.5. Mr. Dauhin was a guest of the resort.

A second man drowned Sunday after entering the rough sea to save a minor child. Despite red flag warnings, the minor managed to enter the water.

The child was rescued by an on-duty lifeguard who returned to the water to retrieve the man. However, 36-year-old Luis N. of Veracrusz drowned after being pulled out to sea at Playa Chaac Mol in Cancun. He was rescued from the water unconscious. Paramedics were unable to revive him.
