Cancun, Q.R. — Heavy rains have hit most of the region from Cancun to Tulum with officials out cleaning wells to avoid city flooding.
Ayuntamiento de Benito Juárez had brigades out in full force cleaning absorption wells in all areas of Cancun with the intention of avoiding flooding as a result of the rains that arrived Tuesday.
Municipal authorities in Cancun are reminding people to take precautions since more heavy rains are forecast for Wednesday. Tulum city officials were also out before the arrival of the rains, clearing out city absorption wells to also avoid potential flooding.
Mayor Victor Mas Tah was on hand for some of the 300 wells cleared by city officials who also made their way to the communities of Akumal and Chemuyil. Mas Tah says they have 1.1 million peso set aside for this purpose.
“In the previous administrations, the corresponding development and clearing of the wells had not been carried out, which was generating flood problems, therefore, this cleaning will be beneficial since vehicles and pedestrians can circulate without problems,” he explained.
He also mentioned that an additional 30 absorption wells are being built in different areas of the city that are known to be flood-prone.
Mas Tah noted that he has issued instructions to the Directorate of Municipal Public Services, headed by Adrián Manzanilla Lagos, who will verify that the wells have been cleared to avoid flooding in the coming months.
An additional day of heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast for the region for Wednesday.
