Cancun, Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Intense rains remain in the forecast for the Cancun, Riviera Maya region for another day, reports the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN).
El Servicio Meteorológico Nacional says that for the northwest region, heavy rains are expected in Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, adding that the thunderstorm activity remains under surveillance across the region.
The storms, they report, are the result of the first cold front of the year, which lies in northwest of Mexico. At 07:00 hours Central Mexico time, SMN reports a zone of instability in the Atlantic basin located approximately 110 kilometers west-northwest of Mérida, Yucatán.
While the system has a low chance of development over the next 48-hours, it could bring additional rain to the peninsula as well as to the southeast as it slowly travels westward at 8 km/h.
Aside from thunderstorms and the potential for heavy rains, SMN says that temperatures for the Cancun, Riviera Maya region remain high, with daytime recordings of between 35 to 40 degrees Celsius.
