Health authorities report Gamma variant dominates infections in Quintana Roo

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Secretary of Health says the Gamma variant is the predominate covid-19 virus in the state. The agency says 47 percent of infections recorded are of that variant.

At a press conference, the Secretary of Health of Quintana Roo, Alejandra Aguirre Crespo, reported that they continue to move forward with vaccinations, noting more than 2.3 million doses have been applied in the state.

“We have a 96.2 percent coverage in the population with the first doses and a million doses in the population with a complete scheme,” she said.

In percentage, the Variants of Concern (VOC) identified for the state are Gamma with 47 percent, Delta with 21 percent, Ómicron with 12 percent and Alpha with 10 percent of recorded infections.

The other variants classified as of interest contribute to the remaining percentage.

In total numbers, 36 cases of the Omicron variant have been identified in Quintana Roo, of which 34 come from Cancun and two from Playa del Carmen.

She also announced that as of Monday, a total of 1,232 rapid tests were administered in the health modules in Chetumal and Cancun, of which 479 were positive.
