Group of six arrested in Cancun for alleged extortion attempts

Cancun, Q.R. — A group believed responsible for extortion attempts has been arrested in Cancun. The takedown occurred Saturday at 7:20 a.m. when ministerial police surrounded a residential area in Region 249.

When the group saw police, they began to fire shots, however police shot back, wounding one man in the buttocks. He was taken to hospital under police guard.

The arrests were made after police were notified of a recent extortion attempt of workers at a construction site in the area of Cielo Nuevo in Region 249. Two of the arrested were found carrying weapons. Three vehicles were also seized by police.

Four of the six detained were between the ages of 25 to 31. Police said that one of the men arrested is believed to be the leader of a local criminal group known involved with extortion cases.
