Group of 7 in Playa del Carmen jailed for cutting electricity to homes who did not make “family fee” extortion payment

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A group of seven people have been arrested on charges of extortion of residents in an irregular area of Playa del Carmen. Over the weekend, police responded to the request for assistance after residents in the irregular neighborhood of In-House made the complaint.

According to the 911 call, a group of men were threatening residents, saying if they did not hand over a “family fee” payment, they would cut the electricity to their home.

In custody on charges of alleged extortion are David N, Gilbert N, Ariana N, Víctor N, Luis N, Erick N and Bryan N. They were located on Constituyentes Avenue after police spotted one member from the group cutting electric cables, while several others stood next to a car waiting.

At the sight of police, they tried to flee, but were intercepted and arrested. A review of their vehicle revealed a weapon and ammo.
