Cancun, Q.R. – Nearing completion, Gran Rueda Cancún is the latest site to hit the Cancun skyline.
The large wheel, which is located in the parking lot of what was once the Coral Negro Square in the city’s Hotel Zone, is similar to that of wheels installed in other destination cities including Paris and London.
The new attraction is located Blvd. Kukulkan at kilometer 9.5 of the Hotel Zone where it will offer a unique bird’s-eye perspective of the area, including spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and Laguna Nichupté.
Construction of the 200-million-peso wheel began January 30 and when completed, will become another tourist option for visitors. Gran Rueda Cancún will consist of 42 climate-controlled gondolas and will reach approximately 60 meters into the sky as it rotates eight people per car in a circle.
The entire experience will last about 20 minutes, offering those inside a slow-ride panoramic view of the area. There is no word yet on prices, however, it has been said that locals will receive a discount. The project was scheduled to open next week, but has been delayed due to permit issues.
Gran Rueda Cancún is made by Dutch Wheels International out of Holland and is a private Dutch-Mexican investment. The same tourist wheel titled La Grand Rueda was erected in Mexico City in March of last year.
