Government reports no damage to Cozumel corals

Cozumel, Q.R. — The Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) reported that planted corals on the coastline of the Chankanaab Natural Park are in good condition after the passage of Hurricane Delta.

Faced with the onslaught of strong winds and swells caused by the passage of the hurricane, biologists from the Conservation and Environmental Education, led by project coordinator Antonio Chale Chim, confirmed that the coral ecosystem restoration program has been successful and remains in good condition.

This restoration program began in coordination betwen Fundación de Parques and Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) and the Oceanus AC organization in 2017, planting more than a 1,000 fragments that were installed through colonies in the structures along the Chanknaab coastline.

The director of the Conservación and Educación Ambiental (CEA) Rafael Chacón Díaz, said that after this good news, the monitoring and planting of more fragments from the nurseries will continue so they can repopulate and expand the reforestation area of the coral in Chankanaab.
