Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – Over the past year, the German tourism market has taken over the lead from Spain with the number of visitors to the region.
Reports show that during 2016, German tourists to the Riviera Maya outnumbered all others in the European market, taking first place away from Spain. Dario Flota Ocampo, Tourism director for the Riviera Maya, says that the German market grew by 14 percent last year, reaching 160,000 regional tourists.
He says that the reason for the growth is due to the economical strength increase in Germany. In 2015, Riviera Maya saw 139,833 visitors and last year, those figures grew to 160,000. He adds that the increase is expected to continue into 2017.
Great Britain is also a strong European tourism market for the Riviera Maya along with Spain.
Mexico is participating in the International Tourism Fair, which is the world’s largest travel and trade show, being held in Berlin March 8 to 12 of this year.
