Fuel tanker overturns in Cancun Hotel Zone leaks fuel, causes traffic chaos

Cancún, Q.R. — A transport truck driver carrying thousands of liters of fuel miscalculated his turn Friday in Cancun when he upset his unit.

The transport truck was traveling at kilometer 27 of the Cancun Hotel Zone around 3:00 p.m. when the driver miscalculated and overturned his truck in a roundabout.

Emergency personnel from the Cancun fire department as well as Civil Protection were quick on scene since the trailer was carrying 32,000 liters of airplane fuel.

The overturn caused a fuel leak onto the roadway, which in turn, caused officials to close down the road. Transit police managed traffic while authorities manged the fuel spill. A large crane was eventually brought in to upright the fuel tanker.

Antonio Fosseca León, Director of Civil Protection for Benito Juárez, said that authorities from transit police to federal police were involved in clearing up the accident while firemen and civil protection officials tended to the fuel spill.

There were no reports of injuries. The roadway was finally reopened to traffic around 8:00 p.m.
