Cancun, Q.R. — Google has launced its Google Station to nearly 60 locations throughout Mexico including the Cancun International Airport. The new launch means free public WiFi in key, high-traffic areas.
Free WiFi, powered by Google, is available at almost 60 public venues across the country in partnership with local ISP Sitwifi. While this is Google’s third launch of the station, it is the first in Latin America.
“Google Station will launch in Mexico initially with 56 points, the idea is to gradually grow and reach more cities and more spaces,” Miguel Ángel Alva, Marketing Director for Google Mexico.
Google Station offers high speed connection in public places such as shopping centers, airports and bus stations via WiFi. The concept is part of the company’s Next Billion Users global initiative that today, employs more than 400.
Google says rather than building new WiFi infrastructure from scratch, they partner with existing ISPs by offering them access to Google’s high-performance WiFi platform, deployment tools and brand.
“Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful and this means reaching all people. We know that the country has made great advances, since 63 percent of the population is connected and 77 percent do so through a mobile device, so having free access is key to connecting all Mexicans,” he added.
Google says it expects to expand the service to more than 100 locations throughout Mexico before the end of the year.
Anjali Joshi, vice president of Google Station explained, “Now, users in Mexico, the first Latin American country to obtain Google Station, will experience high-quality connections to the Internet at airports, bus stations and shopping centers.
“We want to expand to new high-traffic places to help more people connect, so we are looking for strategic partners and visionaries to work on this effort.”
In addition to Mexico City, Google Station is available in some cities of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Durango, Jalisco Guerrero, Guanajuato, Queretaro, San Luis Potosi, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, State of Mexico, Tabasco , Campeche, Chiapas, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
In Quintana Roo, Google Station is available at both the Cancun and Cozumel International Airport. For a full list of Google Station WiFi hot spots in Mexico, visit the Google Station map.
