Four killed in head-on Tulum highway crash

Tulum, Q.R. — An accident between two vehicles that collided head on has left four dead and several others seriously injured.

During the early morning hours of Saturday, one vehicle allegedly invaded the oncoming lane, causing the two to crash at high speed. The accident happened at 5:55 a.m. on the Tulum-Coba highway along a section toward the town of Macario Gómez.

Upon colliding, the two out-of-state vehicles carrying friends and family instantly left the driver of one car deceased. According to the police report, four others in the same State of Mexico-plated SUV, three women and one man, were seriously injured and rushed to Playa del Carmen hospital.

Two of the women, a 17 and 21-year-old, were visiting from Valladolid, Yucatán, while another man and a woman from the same vehicle were listed as being from the town of Francisco Hu May.

The male driver of the second vehicle, a Volkswagen car, was also killed in the collision while his male passenger, who was from the community of Chemax Yucatán, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Since the accident, a total of four deaths have been confirmed.

A stream of vehicles nearly two kilometers long was generated after police, Civil Protection, firemen and emergency personnel shut down the highway to attend to the scene.
