Four arrested in killing of Cancun police officer

Cancun, Q.R. — Four people have been arrested for the killing of a Cancun police officer over the weekend.

According to the Homicide Unit of the State Attorney General’s Office, the arrests took place after an aggressive search for the men and their vehicle. Police were able to track them down and take them into custody.

The shooting happened Saturday afternoon in the irregular colony known as Valle Verde at a gas station along José López Portillo Avenue of Cancun. Reports say that the officer was shot by others inside a passing vehicle.

Those arrested have been identified as 33-year-old José Antonio R.D. from Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz along with 27-year-old Gamaliel G.M. from Chiapas. Also taken into custody were 15-year-old Kevin Daniel C.H. from Cancun and Gerardo L.E., 36 and also from Chiapas.

Killed was 40-year-old Juan Carlos López Pérez who was a member of the Tourist Police in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

The four males have been handed over to the Public Ministry for their alleged participation in the murder of a policeman. Upon their arrest, police also found guns and ammunition inside the vehicle.
