Former mayor of Playa del Carmen denied release of precautionary detention

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The former mayor of Playa del Carmen, Mauricio JosĂ© GĂ³ngora Escalante, will remain behind bars after a judge denied his request for a change in his precautionary detention.

The denial came after a judge deemed him a flight risk. He will remain imprisoned even though lawyers argued that he suffers from Type 2 diabetes, asthma and hypertension. The former head of the municipality of Solidaridad has been charged with the diversion of resources in excess 748 million peso.

Mauricio GĂ³ngora continues to be held on charges of embezzlement against the municipality.
