Fonatur says construction for Maya Train and new Cancun-Tulum highway scheduled to begin

Cancun, Q.R. — The Andrés Manuel government confirmed that on the 30th of this month, work for the Palenque-Escárcega section of the Maya Train will start, adding that at the end of May, construction for a new highway between Cancun and Tulum will also begin.

Rogelio Jiménez Pons, the director of Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (Fonatur) said that according to what was announced a couple of months ago, the section that would have passed through Cobá to Tulum was scrapped due to archaeological and geological issues, saving 5.5 billion peso.

He added that on April 30, construction for the Palenque-Escárcega section will begin. He also explained that starting May 30, “two very important projects will begin on the Cancun-Tulum highway.”

According to the official, “it will be a new two-lane highway with a central lane for the train without any crossing or overpass,” to take advantage of the existing CFE transmission lines.

Jiménez Pons said the Maya Train will contribute to the economic diversification of Quintana Roo with an industrial and service area of about 1,000 hectares near the airport. “It will be a great development center with a new power plant, fuel and charging station,” he explained noting that he trusts that the proposal by the Government of Quintana Roo to create a light train to connect Cancun with the Maya Train will be carried out.
