Cozumel, Q.R. – The first sea turtle to lay eggs on the island of Cozumel was recorded this week, another female who made the trek earlier than normal. The female loggerhead was stumbled upon accidently by biologist, Rafael Chacon Diaz.
“These animals do not understand dates, they only know that the time comes when they have to start their breeding cycles and go to the places where they were born to spawn,” says Chacon Diaz.
The official season on the island normally begins May 15. This is the second case of early an early sea turtle arrival this year. A sea turtle was spotted on a Cancun beach earlier in the month where she left behind 71 eggs.
