Bacalar, Q.R. — A bus accident involving two cars remains under investigation by state authorities after two people were reported killed and more than 20 injured.
The accident between a bus and two compact vehicles on Saturday night is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office.
Through a communiqué, it was reported that a prosecutor from the Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation into the events that occurred on the highway near the town of Pedro Antonio de los Santos.
Reports say that a bus that had left Cancun was involved in a crash with two private vehicles after the driver tried to pass one of the two cars. The bus was consumed by flames after it hit a compact vehicle on the Bacalar-Pedro Santos stretch.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of the tour bus was traveling at an excessive speed, trying to pass a vehicle, however, another vehicle was oncoming. The driver of the bus was unable to rejoin his lane and ended up colliding with the side of the oncoming car.
The bus skidded for more than 400 meters. The bus and one of the cars caught fire. At least 20 people were injured while two males died. One person died on scene and the other in a Chetumal hospital.
