FGE says stepmother primary suspect in death of 8-year-old Cancun girl

Cancun, Q.R. — In a press release by the Attorney General of the State of Quintana Roo, authorities report the arrest of Reyna C, the stepmother of an 8-year-old girl who died from chemical ingestion.

The arrest stems from the February 17th death of the girl at the General Hospital of Cancun who had been readmitted to hospital after suffering months of injuries from chemical ingestion. The FGE reported that according to the autopsy report, the cause of death was due to various injuries compatible with burns in the digestive tract caused by the intake of chemicals.

The unidentified girl was temporarily living with her father and stepmother while her biological parents were disputing a custody battle. In December, a family member took the girl to hospital after she complained of “feeling bad” after ingesting acid. The child also allegedly showed signs of physical abuse.

Derived from the above, another relative of the minor filed a complaint with the State Attorney General’s Office for family violence when she obtained a testimony from the victim in which she said that her father’s current partner had forced her to ingest the acid and then threatened her.

In January, the child was handed over to DIF (el Sistema Nacional para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia) where her health worsened. She was readmitted to hospital and died February 17th.

On Sunday, Investigative Police of Cancun exercised an arrest warrant against Reyna C, the current partner of the child’s father for the alleged involvement in the death of the 8-year-old, the Attorney General of the State (FGE) reported.
