Hermosillo, Sonora — In what turned out to be a traffic violation, federal police in Sonora report the seizure of nearly half a ton of crystal methamphetamine.
The Federal Police, through the Regional Security Division, say they seized around 484 kilos of the drug that was packed in sacks disguised as sugar. The find came when officials intercepted a trailer traveling along the Hermosillo-Nogales highway in the municipality of Carbó.
Officials stopped the driver of the semi for an improper lane change. Once the unit was stopped, federal officials asked the driver for the corresponding documentation of the unit and the load it was carrying, which according to the documents, consisted of 600 sacks of sugar weighing 30,000 kilos.
According to the review protocol, a total of 597 sacks of sugar were actually counted, however, out of that count, 585 contained sugar while 12 sacks were found to be crystal methamphetamine.
The driver along with the unit and the cargo were seized and made available to the Public Ministry of the Federation.
